Microsoft removing Copilot from select Office apps

Dear colleagues, 

Microsoft announced a service change affecting Copilot availability for M365 office applications for users without a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot premium license. 

What is changing 

    • Starting on April 15, 2026, the Copilot icon in ribbon is no longer available in: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. 
    • Copilot Chat remains available to faculty, staff and students:  
    • In the Microsoft 365 Copilot app 
    • In the Outlook app, including the inbox and calendar features 
    • In the Teams app 

 

Who is affected 

    • Users without a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium license  
    • No changes for full Copilot-licensed users  

 

What you need to do 

    • No action is required from your end.  
    • If you need Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote, a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license is required. (learn more
